About the Mentor Program
M/P= Mentor Program U/S =Understudy
Purpose of the Program
The goal of the Mentor Program is to supplement the growth and development of officials, with an emphasis on assisting younger/newer referees requiring additional guidance. It was created to extend the training opportunities beyond normal classroom instruction, and provide personal interaction enabling Mentors to focus on the individual officiating needs of their designated Understudy.
The M/P also serves as an extension to the Ratings Committee by providing an increase of written evaluations on our members at no cost. Evaluations provide the Board and the Ratings Chair with documented feedback about the ability and growth of our officials.
Who is eligible to participate?
Mentors & U/S’s must be “full time” members and in good standing with the SOCBOA. Select volunteers are accepted on an exception basis.
Who are the M/P Sub-Committee Members?
Abby Pezzner / Andre’ “Ace” Thomas / Penny McGee
How many SOCBOA members will the M/P accept?
A maximum number of 10 U/S’s are selected on a year-to-year rotation with each U/S being assigned a Mentor. Although participation is limited, the program is effectively managed with a smaller group of participants.
How are Mentors & U/S’s selected?
The MP Sub-Committee governs the selection process, which will be reviewed on an annual basis to make necessary adjustments. In the interest of fairness, the current selection process is as follows:
Mentor Selection
U/S Selection
Because the M/P Sub-Committee is unfamiliar with the names and ability levels of our newer members, recommendations from lower level class instructors are relied upon to aid us in selecting the participants. Varsity rated U/S’s are selected by the M/P Sub-Committee.
Mentor & U/S matching
After selections of the Mentors & U/S’s are completed, the final selection process is to match the U/S with a Mentor. The M/P Sub-Committee will collectively decide which Mentor is best suited for which U/S based on ability, enthusiasm, and other factors.
Is there a fee for the U/S to receive an evaluation?
Because Mentors volunteer their time, this program provides written evaluations at no cost to the U/S. Evaluations are available on-line for review by the Baord of Directors, the Ratings Chair, and all M/P participants.
What happens if my Mentor or U/S “drops the ball”?
If you feel that your Mentor or U/S is not communicating or displays a lack of participation, please call a M/P Sub-Committee member ASAP. The program will work if both parties fulfill their commitment.
Surveys
